CEA member Bette DeFosses, a Wolcott teacher, needs a new kidney, and she is appealing to her colleagues for help. DeFosses, a school psychologist, has polycystic kidney disease, which causes fluid-filled cysts to grow on the kidneys. Over time, these cysts multiply and grow, and in 50 percent of cases cause kidney failure. At present, Bette's kidney function is at 23 percent, and she says when it gets to 15 percent then dialysis will be necessary. Bette told the CEA Advisor newspaper, "You hear about people helping one another by being an organ donor. Now I'm hoping someone will help me." Bette can be reached at bettedefosses@yahoo.com. The CEA Advisor newspaper has featured stories about teachers being donors.
