What are the warning signs? How can educators effectively identify and address students’ mental health issues? Come to a workshop presented by the CEA Human and Civil Rights Commission on May 7 and hear the answers from experts in the field.
Dr. Andrea M. Spencer, Dean of the School of Education at Pace University, will share the findings from her 2013 study, “Blind Spot: The Impact of Early Warning Signs on Children’s Mental Health.” Dr. Spencer’s study sought to find the types of developmental and social risk factors associated with behavioral and mental health problems in early adolescence, and what kind of services students get once they are identified as having mental health issues.
Dr. Lisa Namerow and Dr. Laura Saunders, both of Hartford Hospital/Institute of Living, will discuss the common myths versus typical patterns of development for adolescent emotional health, how depression and anxiety play a role in peer difficulties and substance use, and what warning signs educators should look for in their students.
This workshop, free for CEA members, begins with registration and refreshments at 4 p.m. The program will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at The Sheraton South in Rocky Hill.
