Statement from CEA President Jeff Leake on Congresswoman Jahana Hayes’ Resolution to Prevent Federal Funds from Being Used to Arm Teachers
We are grateful to Congresswoman Jahana Hayes for standing up for students and her colleagues here in Connecticut and across the country and saying no to guns in our schools. Our members support solutions to addressing school shootings, but arming teachers is not one of those solutions. Betsy DeVos’ School Safety Commission recommendations to use federal funds to put guns in our schools and in the hands of teachers is deplorable. We must listen to the students, educators, and parents, who have unequivocally stated they do not want more guns in schools and have overwhelmingly rejected the idea of arming educators. Federal education dollars should never be used to purchase guns or train teachers how to fire them, especially when our schools are in need of so many basic necessities, including books, technology, school social workers, and so much more. Money should be spent on resources needed to positively impact classroom teaching and learning to improve student performance—not on guns!
