Yesterday’s action by PEAC defines the clear use and purpose of the state mastery exam and specifies that it should be used to inform decisions regarding academic programs, curriculum, and resources for students. Utilizing assessments in a way that corresponds to their purpose and design provides more ways for teachers and administrators to work together toward innovative goals that improve student achievement. Mastery tests, however, are not designed for evaluation of teachers or administrators.
We look forward to the State Board of Education adopting PEAC’s recommendation so that we can continue moving forward to improve the educational opportunities for all public school students in Connecticut.
