Connecticut high school seniors who go on to college have the chance to receive $2,500 through a scholarship program the Office of the State Treasurer launched recently. The CHET Advance Scholarship will award the funds to up to 200 high school seniors.
The only eligibility requirement is that a student be a high school senior who intends to go to college by September 2015. Students will need to upload their school transcript in order to verify where they attend high school, but there is no GPA or other similar requirement. Winning seniors will be chosen on a random basis.
“The challenges of financing a college education are daunting enough. Add to that our economy’s slow recovery, and we know that many Connecticut families are struggling to provide a solid future for their children,” said State Treasurer Denise L. Nappier.
There are two categories of high school seniors who can apply for the CHET Advance Scholarship:
Category 1: Seniors who attend a public, private, or parochial Connecticut high school other than a high school identified by the Connecticut Department of Education as a Review or Turnaround school; or attend a public, private, or parochial school outside of Connecticut and either the student or one of the student’s parents resides in Connecticut; or are home-schooled seniors in Connecticut; and
Category 2: Seniors who attend a Review or Turnaround high school.
There will be separate random drawings to select 200 winners. One hundred winners will be selected from each category of seniors.
“We strived to make sure that this program was available to those who can least afford to go to college. Students who need an extra financial boost will have the chance to get it, and next calendar year we will continue to focus on need as an eligibility requirement for a significant number of scholarships to be granted,” Nappier said.
Applications will be accepted from 8 a.m. EST on September 16 through 5 p.m. EST on October 4.
