The Connecticut Education Association has endorsed State Representative Gary Holder-Winfield in the special election for the open State Senate District 10 seat.
CEA President Sheila Cohen said, “Gary has long been an advocate for public education and labor unions. He has shown a willingness to work with educators and put the needs of students and public schools first.”
The special election will take place on Tuesday, February 25, for New Haven and West Haven voters. The Senate vacancy came about when former State Senator Toni Harp was elected mayor of New Haven.
The CEA endorsement process includes a review of the candidates by the CEA Political Action Committee, a committee elected by and made up of CEA members, and a discussion at the Board level. After careful consideration, the CEA Board of Directors voted unanimously to endorse Holder-Winfield as the candidate whose policies will best serve children, teachers, and public education.
As a Democratic State Representative in New Haven, Holder-Winfield has earned CEA’s endorsement in the two previous elections and has stood out as a champion for public education. If elected, he vows to continue his fight for increased school funding and greater transparency in charter school administrations.
