Teachers have a renewed spring in their step this week at Uncas Elementary School in Norwich thanks to the thoughtful efforts of the school’s PTO. Parents honored educators during Teacher Appreciation Week with fabulous events and tokens of gratitude that left the teachers feeling valued and supported.
“It was just so great,” said kindergarten teacher Meghan Campbell. “It really boosted morale, and teachers were really happy. It shows how much the parents appreciate what we do every day.”
The week’s special events included a huge breakfast spread of eggs, french toast, coffee, fruit and more; a lunch prepared by the parents with dishes representing the diverse cultures of the school; and a chocolate fondue fountain. Teachers also received little flower pots painted to look like apples with candies inside and an appreciation gift with a little poem tagged on.
Campbell said the parents went all out celebrating the teachers, including decorating the teachers’ lounge for each of the events with tablecloths and flower-shaped balloon arrangements.
The parents took the time to visit teachers’ classrooms to personally deliver gifts with words of appreciation. “It was really personal and thoughtful,” said Campbell.
“We were just so thankful,” Campbell continued. She said that, though the events were a lot of fun, what the teachers really appreciated was feeling loved and recognized.
Campbell spoke highly of the PTO at Uncas, saying how supportive members are of teachers and describing the ways they help to get families involved at the school. “The PTO president does a good job getting parents to the school in any way she can,” Campbell said.
“I think the collaboration between parents and teachers is so huge to student success,” added Campbell. “We see a positive change in the students when parents and teachers work together.”
