Champions for students in need
It was a hot and humid day, and the meteorologists called for heavy rain and thunderstorms in the early afternoon. But thankfully, the bad weather held off just long enough for 200 golfers to finish their rounds at the 20th annual Connecticut Education Foundation’s (CEF) Hands Across the Green Golf Tournament at Glastonbury Country Club on July 14.
The outing is always a top-notch event with mostly repeat supporters—teachers from across the state, friends, and business partners—having fun, while raising money for The Children’s Fund to help disadvantaged public school students. This year, the event raised nearly $25,000.
“We pride ourselves on improving the tournament each and every year, while working with our sponsors to host a unique event that gives back to Connecticut’s children,” said CEF President Jeff Leake. “We are at the mercy of Mother Nature, and fortunately, the heavy rain and thunderstorms held off until all the golfers were off the course and safely in the Country Club enjoying the evening activities—dinner, awards, raffles, and a live auction.”
This year marked the 20th anniversary of the tournament which provides a vital source of funding for The Children’s Fund that teachers use to provide funds for essential items for many of their most needy students. From eyeglasses to prescriptions, hearing aids to school supplies and clothing, teachers tap into the fund to help their public school students and their families who are experiencing special medical or financial hardships.
The event began in 1995 with 100 golfers raising $6,000. This year, 200 golfers and sponsors raised nearly $25,000. After two decades, the tournament has raised more than a half million dollars to help thousands of needy and deserving children across the state.
