Thank you for your help! Because of the hard work of CEA members and staff, the following issues are pending in the General Assembly’s legislative session that ends at midnight on Wednesday, May 9.
Teacher Assault: Senate Bill 453, which strengthens teachers’ rights to protect themselves and their students, passed unanimously in the Senate on Friday and is awaiting action in the House.
Rolling Back the Teacher Tax: Repealing the 1% payroll tax hike—it requires reopening the state budget and agreement by Democrats and Republicans.
State Budget Priorities:
- Increased ECS dollars, beginning July 1, 2018
- Increased dollars for the Retiree Health Insurance Fund
- Restoration of TEAM funding
Protection Against ECS Cuts by the Governor: A bill prohibiting the governor from making cuts to next year’s school funding passed the House and is awaiting passage by the Senate.
Prohibit Taking Away Teacher Rights to Bargaining: Proposals to take away teachers’ freedom to bargain for wages, benefits, and working conditions have so far been defeated by CEA members and staff.
Minority Teacher Recruitment: CEA helped improve and pass this important bill, including defeating an attempt to hijack it with unrelated language that would have worsened teacher evaluation.
Please watch for CEA Action Alerts in the next few days. Thank you!
