The education community applauds Attorney General William Tong for taking action to protect Connecticut from the federal government’s efforts to withhold more than $320 million in critical education funding. The money is earmarked for meeting the needs of individual students, and the federal government doesn’t have the right to tie that money to any policy directive. Filing suit to protect our students and our public schools from the federal government’s overstep is the right thing to do for our students and communities.
Connecticut educators provide every student with welcoming environments where they are supported and can thrive. We are proud to live and work in a state that values inclusion, equity, and opportunity for all. We stand with State Department of Education Commissioner Charlene Russell-Tucker and Governor Ned Lamont in their decision not to sign the U.S. Department of Education letter certifying Title VI compliance, and now with Attorney General Tong in his effort to end illegal federal actions that jeopardize our students.
