Educators across Connecticut and nationwide are outraged by the Administration’s latest action to further dismantle key functions of the U.S. Department of Education, eroding the federal government’s critical role in ensuring that students with disabilities receive the support, protections, and services guaranteed under law, and making it more difficult to navigate the system and receive the services they need to succeed.
The Administration’s Office of Legal Counsel’s interpretation of accommodations under Section 504 risks diminishing essential safeguards and services for students with disabilities and limiting their access to equitable educational opportunities. Federal oversight exists to prevent disparities and inequities among states and to ensure that all students have access to a high-quality education. Transferring these responsibilities to agencies with less expertise in education and disability services—and at a time when staffing cuts and expanded workloads are already straining federal resources—raises serious concerns about accountability, consistency, and the ability to effectively serve students and their families.
Students with disabilities and their families deserve a system that is clear, accountable, and focused on their educational success. Weakening federal enforcement threatens those protections and makes it more difficult for families to navigate an already complex system and secure the support their children need.
By taking this action the Administration continues to send a clear message that education is not a national priority. We urge parents, community members, and elected officials to stand together to defend public education and the education every child deserves.
