Today, educators received some encouraging news, and we appreciate the steps taken to improve education and the recognition that more investment is needed in our schools. However, the governor’s budget proposal falls short of the bold, immediate action needed to address the urgent crises of special education funding and the teacher shortage facing our state.
Public education is the backbone of our democracy, and as educators, our top priority is ensuring that every child—regardless of their zip code, background, or family income—receives a high-quality public education.
While we appreciate the attention the governor is giving to special education with today’s proposal, our students can’t afford to wait years for the crisis to be resolved. Teachers are disappointed that the governor’s proposal doesn’t address special education for this school year or the next.
These initiatives must be paired with broader investments in competitive salaries, improved working conditions, and adequate resources to not only recruit new teachers but also stop the exodus of talented educators from our profession.
