Today marks a somber anniversary: eight years since the tragic shooting that claimed the lives of 20 first-graders and six teachers and staff at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. Sandy Hook remains the deadliest mass shooting at an elementary or high school in the United States.
“We must never forget the precious lives lost that day or the heroism of those educators who fought to protect them,” says CEA President Jeff Leake.
Senator Chris Murphy, a vocal advocate for commonsense gun laws, tweeted today, “The educators inside Sandy Hook Elementary School died protecting their students. Dawn, Annie, Rachel, Mary, Lauren, and Victoria are heroes. It’s been 8 long years of pain and loss for their families. Do something good or kind today in their memory.”
An interfaith service to remember victims will be held virtually this evening at 7pm and broadcast on the Newtown Congregational Church’s YouTube channel.
