Teachers stay very busy working on behalf of their students and school communities and rarely have time to consider legal issues that could impact their careers. It’s crucial that teachers understand the laws that pertain to their employment though, and that’s why CEA’s legal team is here for you. CEA legal counsel not only provides members assistance on a wide range of issues but also offers members free workshops examining the rights and responsibilities of teachers.
During CEA’s Virtual Summer Experience CEA attorneys Melanie Kolek and Adrienne DeLucca presented on the services they provide to members at no cost and gave real life examples of cases they’ve handled in the past.
Watch their presentation, which covered DCF investigations, social media and computer use, educators’ first amendment rights, workers’ compensation, and more. (You will need to log in with your CEA member ID number.)
“We are happy to come out to your particular locals to present at any time on pretty much any legal topic,” Kolek said. “And if it’s not something our department can do, there are a bevy of workshops CEA offers, and we are happy to set you up with that.” (See a list of CEA trainings here.)
“We really would love to spend time coming to every district,” DeLucca added. “My mother always said, ‘An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.'”
“Things change under the law, and that’s why it’s so important for us to be out there delivering this presentation consistently to our membership so you are all in the know and up to date on present areas of the law,” said Kolek.
