The #RedForEd movement is only getting stronger—from Chicago, to Fairplay, CO to Little Rock, to Mendota, IL. Educators and their allies are coming together in communities across the country to create better schools for our children.
Today marks the third day of the Chicago Teachers Union’s strike. Twenty-five thousand teachers and 7,000 support staff have taken to the picket lines to stand strong for a better future for their students.
Chicago teachers are striking for:
- Smaller class sizes
- Fair pay and benefits
- Fully staffed schools
- Justice for their students and their families
In a letter to the president of the Chicago Teachers Union, NEA President Lily Eskelsen García wrote, “NEA and its members are with CTU in calling on Mayor Lightfoot to deliver on her promises. That means assuring that there is a librarian in every school, and enough social workers, nurses, and counselors as well as 1,000 teacher assistants in the elementary and high schools. Moreover, it is an injustice for Mayor Lightfoot to ignore the more 300 special education vacancies.
“Thank you for your strength and courage. NEA members across the country—your national community—are proud of you. Stay strong and united. Continue to stand together for the greater professional respect that you so rightfully deserve.”
To stand with Chicago educators, you can send a statement of support to the Chicago Teachers Union or make a donation to support the fight for the schools Chicago’s students deserve.
