“This attack on the Department of Education—let’s be clear about what it is—it’s an attempt to dismantle public education as we know it here in America,” Connecticut Attorney General William Tong tells CEA President Kate Dias and Vice President Joslyn DeLancey in the latest episode of CEA’s podcast.
Tong and CEA Political Engagement Coordinator Gus Melita discuss the impact of cuts to the U.S. Department of Education and what people in Connecticut can do to stand up for our public schools. Tong joined a coalition of 20 other state attorneys general in suing the Trump administration on March 13 to stop the destruction of the agency.
“We sued, and we sued right away when they tried to cut 50% of the Department of Education, and we’re prepared for the follow up battles to come with their attempts to dismantle the whole agency,” Tong says.
He adds, “I think it’s very important in this moment to be loud and clear about how these cuts impact us, the damage and attack on American education they represent, and to talk about what it would mean if all of this were to be successful—how profound the damage would be.”
