While the presidential race makes national headlines, voters also have the opportunity to elect candidates to many other positions this fall that, while they may be out of the spotlight, can have a big impact on our state, cities, and towns.
To help you learn more about the candidates running for State House and Senate in Connecticut, CEA has compiled a comparison of candidates to let you know where they stand on issues of importance to educators. This tool allows you to easily search for candidates running for office in your town or search by a candidate’s name.
“CEA’s Candidate Comparisons dig into legislative candidates’ positions on the issues and whether their actions match their message,” says CEA President Kate Dias. “It’s transparent and holds legislators and incumbents accountable. It serves as a guide for educators, parents, and community members to elect candidates who support our students and our schools.”
She adds, “Education has become a political hot button with attacks against teachers, curriculum, and schools. We are using our voice and our vote to make sure we are heard, respected, and well-represented.”
The 2023-2024 CEA Report Card score takes into account incumbent legislators’ votes on CEA priority bills and legislation that is important to educators. The score also takes into account a legislator’s advocacy, legislative action, and responsiveness. You can review all of the information provided including the individual votes that go into the score calculation.
The 2024 CEA Legislative Candidate Questionnaire includes topics such as teacher salaries, COVID-19 recognition, classroom safety, teacher recruitment and diversity, just cause, ECS grants, protecting municipal contributions for education, public funds for private schools, opponents to public education, support for English learners, collective bargaining, pensions, the Retired Teachers’ Health Insurance Fund, and Teachers’ Retirement Board elections.
