There’s just one week left in the legislative session, and the decisions made in these final days will directly impact our classrooms, our profession, and our students.
Several education bills are still under consideration, which is why it’s critical for educators to take action now. The links below offer simple, issue‑by‑issue ways to contact your legislators and make your voice heard before the session ends on May 6.
We also want to pause and recognize real progress. This week, the House passed two major CEA priorities (both still need to be voted on by the Senate):
HB 5003 strengthening teacher protections through a fair termination process and workers’ compensation coverage.
HB 5035 establishing a bell‑to‑bell cell phone policy to support learning and reduce distractions in schools.
These wins show what’s possible when educators speak up together. With several other important education issues still moving through the process, now is the time to keep the momentum going.
Below are the key issues still under consideration. Click on each to learn more and take action.
Fair Termination Process – Urge your Senator to pass House Bill 5003 that includes vital protections through Fair Termination and Workers’ Compensation.
Protecting Teacher Privacy – Urge your Representative to pass Senate Bill 325 to protect educators’ and other public employees’ personal home addresses from Freedom of Information requests.
Education Funding – Urge your legislators to prioritize education funding and support modernizing the Education Cost Sharing (ECS) formula.
Bell-to-Bell Cell Phone Ban – Urge your Senator to support House Bill 5035 to establish a bell-to-bell ban on cell phones during the school day.
Teachers’ Retirement Board Disability Subsidy – Urge your legislators to double the TRB Disability Subsidy, as was done with other subsidies in recent years.
Physical Education Credit Waiver – Tell your Representative about the impacts of Senate Bill 222, which would allow districts to exempt students participating in sports from physical education class.
