Today the State Senate, in a 27-8 vote, passed Senate Bill 1371, a “Just Cause” bill, which would give teachers the same basic workplace protections that many other public employees already have.
Now it’s up to the House of Representatives to bring this important legislation to a vote, and teachers need to speak up to get it across the finish line.
What does SB 1371 do?
- Helps to take the politics out of teacher discipline
- Implements the legal standard of “Just Cause” in terminations
- Makes neutral arbitrator termination decisions binding on boards of education
- Provides teachers with the same “Just Cause” standard for termination proceedings that all other board of education employee groups receive
Why this matters:
Too often, educators face unfair or arbitrary discipline that creates a climate of fear and instability in our schools. SB 1371 helps fix that by bringing fairness, clarity, and consistency to how teacher discipline is handled, and ensuring teachers are provided with the same fairness that non-certified school staff already receive.
Now is the time to act. CLICK HERE to tell your state representative to support SB 1371 and bring it to a vote.
It educators across the state speak up, we can ensure that every teacher is treated with fairness and dignity.
