Connecticut’s 2012 Teacher of the Year David Bosso has an extraordinary essay appearing in today’s Hartford Courant.
As we reflect on the tragedy in Sandy Hook and mourn the innocent lives lost in the horrific shooting, Bosso emphasizes the critical role teachers, as dedicated professionals, play by protecting and nurturing students in ways big and small.
Countless lives were saved because of the bravery of the Sandy Hook teachers. As we move forward, your commitment and passion as professionals will be needed more than ever to help your students and colleagues heal from this unspeakable event.
Yesterday Governor Malloy signed an executive order allowing Sandy Hook Elementary School to temporarily utilize Monroe’s Chalk Hill Middle School. The Monroe school was empty after a district consolidation last year. CEA governance and staff have been meeting with AFT Connecticut and are helping in multiple ways.
The governor is asking that this Friday, Dec. 21, at 9:30 a.m., the entire state of Connecticut observe a moment of silence. He is asking that churches ring their bells 26 times to honor the victims.
An outpouring of support has been coming in from across the state, nation, and world. To find out how to support Newtown and for resources on helping children through this hard time, please see this earlier BlogCEA post. Feel free to contact your local president or UniServ Rep if you need additional support or services.
