New draft regulations of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) were issued by the U.S. Department of Education in May. Educators, parents, and other community members have until August 1 to provide feedback.

Now is our last chance to end the era of NCLB and make the new law work for our students and schools, because the draft regulations as proposed won’t get us there.
The new draft regulations don’t remove NCLB’s emphasis on testing. They state that “robust action”—read: punitive action—must be taken against schools that don’t test 95 percent of students. Read the full proposed regulations here.
