Our lives changed one-year ago today, and they will never be the same. Today, families, friends, and educators in the small town of Newtown, across Connecticut and the entire country, are still struggling and dealing with the grief and pain caused by the senseless school shooting that took the lives of 26 innocent people.
The community survived with tremendous support, but the grieving continues as family, friends, and the public move forward and choose how to live with remembering what happened on that fateful day. It’s not a question of forgetting, but remembering and learning to live with the memories. We need to remember what happened, the innocent lives lost, and the heroic educators who struggled to save their students. But we must also do all we can to prevent terrible tragedies like this from ever happening again. Connecticut worked hard to pass one of the toughest gun safety laws in the country, and took steps to increase school safety measures at schools across the state. As a state and as a nation, we need to make important changes to provide a safe and secure learning environment for every child, so that we never face a tragedy like this again.
