A proposal that would finally make things right for teachers’ Social Security benefits is scheduled for a vote this Tuesday, November 12, but it will pass only if educators make their voices heard now.
House Resolution 82 would repeal the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and Government Pension Offset (GPO), which unfairly strip away Social Security benefits from teachers and other public servants and make it difficult or impossible for many to retire.
Click here to urge your House representative to support HR 82 this Tuesday.
In addition, ask your representative to reject HR 5432, which is also up for a vote but is extremely limited in scope. Rather than fully repeal WEP/GPO, this alternative bill is limited only to WEP and offers a mere $100 per month of Social Security benefits to counteract the penalty. It has only 37 cosponsors, as opposed to the 330 that HR 82 boasts. In other words, it is a poor replacement, one that we can’t stand for.
It takes many voices for a message to be heard. We can do this.
