Last week Senate Bill 1371, the “Just Cause” bill, passed the Senate with bipartisan support. Since then, CEA has been working nonstop to get the House of Representatives to bring it to a vote.
Unfortunately, with just days left in the legislative session, the House has still not acted.
The session ends at midnight on Wednesday, June 4. Time is running out, and educators across the state are still waiting for the basic fairness and protections this bill would provide.
Tell legislators that educators need protections now!
SB 1371 ensures that teachers are treated with the same respect and dignity as other public school employees. It establishes “just cause” as the standard for termination, removes politics from the discipline process, and makes neutral arbitration decisions binding. This is not about shielding bad actors. It is about creating a fair, clear, and consistent process before an educator’s career and reputation can be taken away.
Without these protections, educators remain vulnerable to arbitrary or unjust decisions. This creates instability and fear in our schools with educators seeking separation agreements rather than standing up for themselves when they’re wrongfully targeted, and it must be addressed.
Your voice is needed now more than ever. Even if you’ve already contacted your legislator, please do so again. Click here to tell your state representative to support SB 1371 and bring it to a vote before the session ends.
Educators deserve action, not silence.
