Teachers are among the many devastated by wildfires that have destroyed homes, schools, and historic buildings in Maui. The Hawaii State Teachers Association is compiling a list of teachers affected by the wildfires and sharing their donation pages for those who’d like to help.
Teachers in Lahaina, which has suffered severe damage due to the fire, have banded together to help colleagues who have lost homes and belongings.
“HSTA members support one another, and we’re trying to support our neighbors,” said Lahainaluna High School teacher Ashley Olson after hosting colleagues overnight who were forced to evacuate with just a moment’s notice.
Olson said she took in “a teacher, her husband, and three of the four cats they were able to collect while the Maui Police Department was pounding on their door saying, ʻYou gotta get out! You gotta get out!’”

“Our thoughts are with Maui teachers and their family and neighbors facing a very challenging time,” CEA President Kate Dias said. “We will do what we can to help. We stand with you.”
