We are devastated by the loss of life in Minnesota and the immense stress, trauma, fear, and strain this situation has placed on educators, students, and families. The incidents involving federal ICE agents have shaken our community to its core, and our hearts are with every teacher, student, and loved one who has been affected by this senseless violence.
As educators, we work tirelessly to make our schools safe, welcoming, and nurturing places for all children — whether they are children of immigrants or children of ICE agents — so that they can learn without fear. But we can’t do that with armed ICE agents operating in and around our schools, disrupting learning, shattering a sense of safety, and filling families and staff with anxiety.
This cannot continue. Our students’ physical and mental health must be a priority. We urge local, state, and federal leaders to take immediate action to protect students and educators and ensure that every child can learn in a safe and welcoming environment.
