On a bright but chilly Saturday in November, CEA Aspiring Educators rolled up their sleeves at two Connecticut middle schools, bringing color, creativity, and appreciation to the students and staff who learn and work there every day.

A perfect fall day set the stage for CEA’s Aspiring Educator Program kickoff event, where 70 future educators gathered at Lyman Orchards in Middlefield to connect with one another and have fun.
A few years back, CEA’s Aspiring Educator Program only had 80 members. By the end of last school year, the group had grown to 438 members. The success of the CEA’s AEP and its role in attracting young people to the teaching profession was recognized at a recent State Board of Education meeting.

Last fall CCSU’s chapter of CEA’s Aspiring Educator Program was down to just two members. This fall those two members, who stepped up to serve as president and vice president, have been honored by the State Board of Education for their leadership at the local and state levels and have grown their chapter by leaps and bounds.

CEA Aspiring Educators met as a group with legislators on the Education Committee for the first time recently and shared personal stories about the obstacles to becoming a teacher, including unpaid student teaching and low starting salaries.
