President Trump today signed an executive order to dismantle the U.S. Department of Education. While he can’t shutter the department without congressional approval, it seems likely that he’ll have the votes in Congress to do so.
“We’ll have to deal with the impact of this EO in the months and years to come, but right now I encourage teachers to think locally,” says CEA President Kate Dias. “Focus on what’s happening at the local and state levels. Think about our conversations about salary, autonomy, and the ability to attract more individuals to the teaching profession. We can have a big impact on the legislative agenda and make real change here in Connecticut.”
She added, “Look to our state legislators and our local boards of education. We have opportunities to be truly influential and impactful. We will be successful when we stand together and fight for what we know is right.”
Dias was with Fran Rabinowitz, executive director of the Connecticut Association of Public School Superintendents, at CAPSS’ spring conference today. The two recorded the video message below to highlight how we can succeed when we work together.
