In a memo to superintendents yesterday, Commissioner of Education Charlene Russell-Tucker announced that the Connecticut reading survey required biennially of all educators teaching kindergarten through third grade is suspended for this school year.
“Thank you to the State Department of Education, Senator Patricia Billie Miller, and Steven Hernández, executive director for the Commission on Women, Children, Seniors, Equity & Opportunity, for their collaboration and efforts to improve access to strong professional development and ensure teachers are treated fairly,” said CEA Vice President Joslyn DeLancey.
Educators have reported that the Connecticut reading survey is an outdated requirement adding to the workload of already overburdened teachers without helping them improve their pedagogy.
“We look forward to continuing to work together to find better practices for all educators and ensure teachers have access to meaningful PD,” said DeLancey.
