Educators play a critical role in keeping schools safe, and an upcoming virtual session offers a timely opportunity to learn, ask questions, and be heard. Connecticut’s Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection will host virtual School Safety Office Hours tomorrow, Wednesday, December 17, at 3:30 p.m. This session will be the first in a series of ongoing discussions focused on school safety and security in Connecticut.
Tomorrow’s office hours will provide an introduction to the All-Hazards School Security and Safety Plan Standards, which guide how schools prepare for and respond to a wide range of safety concerns. Following the overview, there will be a collaborative discussion focused on how the Department can best support schools and address teachers’ specific needs. Participants are encouraged to ask questions, share concerns about school safety and security, hear updates on state-level initiatives and resources, and engage in meaningful dialogue about what educators need most.
For teachers, school safety planning is not abstract—it directly affects daily work, student well-being, and peace of mind. This session offers a valuable opportunity to better understand the standards that shape safety decisions across the state and how they translate into real-world practices in classrooms and school buildings. By attending, educators can gain clarity on expectations, learn how safety plans are developed, and better understand their role within a comprehensive approach.
Just as importantly, these office hours are designed to be interactive and responsive to educators’ experiences. Teachers’ voices are essential in shaping effective safety policies, and this forum allows you to raise on-the-ground concerns, share practical perspectives, and help identify gaps in existing supports. Whether you are seeking clearer communication, practical resources, or stronger coordination around safety initiatives, participating gives you a direct line to state officials and a chance to help inform future guidance and support for schools across Connecticut.
