An unprecedented Superior Court decision has sent shockwaves across the education community in Connecticut. Meanwhile, the long arm of the federal government is reaching into schools with the new Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). There has never been a more pressing time for teachers to band together and speak out to influence once-in-a-generation judicial, legislative, and regulatory issues.
That’s why CEA is hosting County Forums around the state this October. Attend to
- Learn the latest on how CCJEF and ESSA would impact our classrooms.
- Speak out for our students and our profession.
- Meet with legislators to share our concerns.
The Connecticut Supreme Court is reviewing the ruling in Connecticut Coalition for Justice in Education Funding v. Rell (CCJEF v. Rell) that could have major implications for how the state distributes education funding. It could result in a substantial loss of resources for students and teachers in nearly every district across the state, not just the wealthiest communities. The ruling also imposes broad overreaching mandates on everything from teacher evaluation and compensation to special education and graduation standards.
ESSA breaks new ground in federal policy, but the potential success of the act is only as good as the input from Connecticut’s education community. The clock is ticking and your comments on ESSA are needed to help determine how Connecticut shapes the new law for our students and our profession.
Many of the state lawmakers who will develop and implement new education policy are on the ballot this November. Legislators from across the state have been invited to attend the County Forums to hear directly from you regarding the CCJEF ruling and ESSA implementation. Make sure you know where your legislators stand on education issues.
The CEA Forums will take place on the following dates. Sign in for all forums will begin at 4:30 p.m., and the program will start at 5:00 p.m.
