The Connecticut legislature’s Education Committee is holding a public hearing Monday, February 23, on several of CEA’s priority bills affecting educators, including proposals related to fairness, workers’ compensation protections, and paid student teaching.
This is an opportunity for educators and future educators to share experiences and perspectives directly with legislators.
H.B. 5218 – An Act Concerning Teachers proposes adding “Fair Termination Process” language to the Teacher Tenure Act to ensure that disciplinary decisions are made by a neutral hearing officer and based on facts rather than politics or favoritism. It also includes provisions addressing workers’ compensation for educators who are injured by students during the school day.
Please share your stories or comments about how providing these protections would impact you, your ability to teach, and your colleagues and students. (You may also indicate on the form if you are interested in speaking in-person or virtually at the public hearing.)
The committee will also be hearing testimony on H.B. 5216 – An Act Concerning Paid Student Teaching, which would provide stipends for student teachers.
If you have personal experience with student teaching, have mentored student teachers, or have insights into how paid student teaching could impact recruitment and retention, please share your perspective.
Thank you for taking the time to share your experiences and perspectives and move these important bills forward.
